According to an article by Kevin Benedict, Senior Analyst, Center for the Future of Work, Cognizant “The challenge enterprises are faced with today is that digital technologies are changing the way consumers behave faster and in different ways than executives have ever seen before. Today’s profits can hide or mask the serious problems of tomorrow.” This said, there is no doubt that technology is changing by leaps and bounds and many experts believe that the 4th industrial revolution is going to be soon upon us. Many technologies that was predicted to be a part of the future, like the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence (AI), 3D printing are joining mainstream technical advances now and are being adapted and transforming quickly. Though DevOps as a term was coined a few years ago, there is every chance that it will pave the path for the future – for the 4th industrial revolution. Big data is reforming IT and the way big data and connectivity is being leveraged by different organizations is also undergoing change. In this day and age where new technologies are paving the path for the revolution, undermining the importance of DevOps will not be a smart move for any enterprises. Here is a list of opportunities that enterprises can leverage with DevOps and reasons why DevOps could play a very important role in the 4th industrial revolution.
Chatbots talk to customers and fulfills their requests within a short span of time. When this is combined with DevOps, it provides the enterprises with an effective way to communicate and makes them adaptable to different businesses and services, across multiple platforms. DevOps will make it easier to create and deploy chatbots and will, ultimately, increase the productivity of the developer. Additionally, it will also decrease the cost of running and maintaining the chatbot.
Internet of Things (IoT)
Another area to watch out for when it comes to why DevOps will lead the revolution is IoT. Smart devises are getting smarter, and the whole concept of how we deal with hardware and software is changing. This is where DevOps and its collaboration of process, people and product comes in. It gives you the leverage of building a scalable environment for your IoT to take shape. Speedy resolution of issues, quicker feedback, willingness to be responsive, all of these are brought in by DevOps to IoT. Digital products and services have already started turning to digital capabilities that increase the value for customers and DevOps is vital in that environment.
Many organizations have moved to cloud based solutions in the recent past. They are certainly seen as a cheaper option, when compared to investing in their own infrastructure which could act as a huge overhead. Cloud solution providers are providing private, public and hybrid cloud options that are viable for big, medium and small enterprises alike. Additionally, enterprises can tweak these options based on their needs using Service Level Agreements (SLAs). As the cloud gains more relevance, DevOps also will become more relevant thanks to its automation solutions, collaboration solutions, and the cost efficiency it provides.
Big Data and analysis
Big data is the order of the day. The use and relevance of big data is growing, and with it the need to store it and analyze it. Thereafter, enterprises have the process of learning from it and adapt to the changes required. DevOps is all about smaller software development life cycles (SDLCs) and quicker feedback adoption, and automation amongst other things. Therefore, when more and more big data is gathered, the gathering and analyzing of it will invariably turn to DevOps automation.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The use and relevance of artificial intelligence is growing. Since this technology is in a fairly nascent stage, there are a lot of players looking at it as the next big thing. So if you want to keep up with the race to the finish line, you will need to apply a more aggressive attitude towards its Go-to-market (GTM) strategy. DevOps and GTM though very different in concept complement each other in how the organization functions and goes on to get best customer satisfaction in a limited period of time.
Finally, these are only a handful of the technological changes that are potentially going to be our future. We need to be prepared for so many more changes such as robotics, applications, 3D printing and so on that will change our future. But if there is one thing that technology pundits can predict, it is that technology will start to focus more and more on the user rather than on just the product.
Therefore, DevOps is for you if you want to run an enterprise where your entire team collaborates, your business is ahead in technological advances and is moving towards digital like the rest of the world. If you want security to be prioritized, ensure value for customers while the costs are lower, then you are part of this revolution. Else you are just going to be left behind.
DevOps is all about integrating products, process, and more importantly people – such as developer teams and operation teams. This is why DevOps is going to be all important, is here to stay, and will probably even spearhead the 4th industrial revolution.
