Managed DevOps for Hybrid Enterprises

On cloud and on premise cloud computing

Most enterprises are trying to grapple with cloud adoption, especially large-scale cloud adoption using optimization techniques and frameworks.  Choosing between public and private cloud is still a daunting task and most enterprises are looking to mitigate the level of software disruption caused by large scale transformation. A hybrid model seems a very appealing solution since enterprises can control security and governance models and also benefit from the cloud.

While it has its advantages, one must understand that hybrid cloud is not the ultimate solution.  One of its biggest challenges is to keep the software development lifecycle in sync across multiple target environments. In a DevOps environment though, a hybrid model is probably the most appropriate as it can achieve minimum disruption with maximum benefit.

Why is a hybrid cloud model important?

In today’s complex business world enterprises are forced to choose a hybrid IT solution which is usually a combination of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) to eliminate vendor-lockin.

Hybrid models usually are:

  • a combination of traditional and virtual platforms
  • multiple platforms with enterprise architecture
  • domain specific SaaS/PaaS solutions
  • No standardization across hypervisors* (hypervisor or virtual machine monitor is a computer software, firmware or hardware that creates and runs virtual machines)

For technology to work across these parameters, it requires a high level of automation in delivery, operations as well as business planning.

The challenges of cloud adoption

  • Security is one of the biggest challenges for cloud adoption for enterprises security model s this calls for revamping the existing enterprise security model. There need to be same policies across public cloud.
  • Cloud and governance models- many enterprises have matured ITIL model and the cloud disrupts these models. Hybrid models are not limited to physical environments alone but also support these models.

How DevOps helps hybrid cloud implementation

These issues aren’t as difficult to resolve as many organizations may think. Public clouds like AWS or Azure are so powerful when optimized properly, but this is difficult to accomplish without the help of a Managed Services Provider or a hybrid cloud management tool. It is in such scenarios that DevOps implementation can be a great advantage as it can prevent many of these challenges from becoming detrimental. DevOps can improve delivering projects on schedule, keep projects within budget, and maintain service quality. Cloud Management Platform reduces the friction and complexity teams may find when using microservices, containers, and cloud-native apps. They can also help with provisioning, automation, workflow orchestration, and more. DevOps is not only a culture change first, but tools, services, management, and consulting can make it a lot easier and more efficient.

DevOps for hybrid cloud implementations will soon become the de facto model for process transformation in large enterprises. There are a variety of use cases for a hybrid model, and most enterprise situations would fall under one or more of those categories. Consider a scenario where a large bank has outsourced some of the complementary services like mortgage or reward points system management to a different division of the bank or even a trusted outside partner. These complementary services can operate from a public cloud environment as part of the system of engagement with customers while interacting with the system as the trusted system of record. Emerging technologies can effectively participate in today’s mobile computing platforms to enable this. It may take a while, but if the algorithms and network architecture are chosen well, the machine learning system will start to produce results that closely match the actual ones.
